Simmons alleges discrimination

Ex-health director says early retirement forced

The former director of the Christian County Health Department has filed a discrimination complaint that alleges her early exit was “forced” by racial, age and gender bias.

Anita Simmons retired as department head last May with little comment. Simmons was expected to retire later in August.

A 47-year-old Hopkinsville man was stabbed to death on his way into his apartment late Saturday night, police reported.

Terry Lynn Word, of Pennyrile Apartments on North Elm Street, had gone outside to retrieve his cell phone from his van around 11 p.m. Saturday, Gertrude Woods, who raised Word as a foster mother, told the New Era.

A Sunday evening turned into a nightmare for five people in a Cox Mill Road home when three men broke into the home and assaulted them and sexually abused an 18-year-old female at gunpoint, police said.

Steven Turner, 20, Daniel Baker, 19, an 18-year-old female, a 16-year-old female and a 13-year-old female, were at 2528 Cox Mill Road when three strangers entered the house carrying handguns around 8:15 p.m. Sunday, according to a report from the Hopkinsville Police Department. It is New Era policy not to release the names of victims of sexual abuse. Police did not release the names of any of the juvenile victims.
